12/11/2007 - A fitting send off for the season
It was a great end to the kite surfing season this weekend that it should be more or less sunny, pretty cold but the wind was perfect and Whitstable was the location for most of the kite surfers in Kent and Essex to descend on for their final rides of the year.
This year has had it's ups and downs with a hot spring followed by an erratic summer then a lovely (but windless) autumn. The lack of predictability, along with many Britons leaving the UK to kitesurf abroad (albeit with not much better results it seems) caused numerous casualties within the kite sports industry with several schools and shops closing down.
It's fitting then that the location which has been the most consistent in the south of England should have the final big send off of the year with over 50 riders coming down over the course of Saturday and nearly that many again on Sunday. Surprisingly with a high tide in the middle of the day and strong cross-onshore winds there were no major incidents with only minor incidents (one a chap blocking the whole entry and exit of the beach by standing with a kite above his head and another bloke deciding he'd walk up the promenade flying a kite).
A cracking weekend all told.
