06/04/2005 - Where to launch at Whitstable
Whitstable is a fantastic riding spot. Plenty of shallow, flat water at low tide and nice rolly ramps at high tide. Coupled with two natural prevailing winds, it could be argued that Whitstable is the best single location for nearly every wind direction - it could be - were it not for the turbulence we get when the wind blows any way westerly...
Due to the absence of groynes on Long Beach, in a westerly wind we are forced to launch from the Harbour End to zip out and around the end of the Harbour and into the clean wind where it is a bit more cross-shore.
This is a warning to all that ride at Whitstable, after seeing two very large stacks yesterday [thankfully with no injuries], that it is imperative to get down the beach onto the Shingle Spit as far as possible before launching. The turbulence coming off the restaurant, beach huts and factory is immense and we have seen so many kite surfers get hurt from launching there it really isn't funny. Get down the bottom of the beach and out towards the harbour and it cleans up dramatically. At the very least you won't damage your kit - let alone yourself.
Remember, you shouldn't be riding alone anyway so there should nearly always be someone that can launch your kite for you - even if you need to quickly grab an instructor who is mid-lesson they will always come over and help you launch and land.
