26/11/2005 - TK sponsors Arctic Foxes
Most people enjoy getting out and flying a kite on the beach regardless of gender or age. Well today the four women making up the Arctic Foxes had their baptism of ice into the world of traction kiting.
Transition Kiteboarding was happy to lend their expertise to the Arctic Foxes, who plan on being the first all women British team to cross Greenland. As if that wasn't laudable in it's own right, they want to use kites to help them cross at speed and make an attempt on the crossing speed record!
The girls had already started thir fitness training by the time they came and spent a day with Andrew being put throught their paces with the kites.
It really was a taste of things to come for the Arctic Foxes as we had a very stiff notherly wind on what was quite a cold day even out of the wind. With the breeze at about 25kts the wind chill was making the temperature sit around -5C. Perfect then considering what they were going to be doing next May.
Jo, Rachel, Felicity and Jenny all did exceptionally well, proving that even in strong wind being big or small doesn't make much difference - it all comes down to technique.
As well as doing their basic training Andrew offered up some wind strategy based on prevailing winds and the like in Greenland and how to maximise their speed, we also gave them some kites to practice with when they go out to Norway in January.
We wish the Arctic Foxes the very best of luck in their endeavour and you'll see more of them about as the crossing time gets closer.
